Most people open a bloodwork PDF, see a wall of acronyms and numbers, and immediately feel like they need a translator. They are not wrong. Modern panels include dozens of markers, and the reference ranges next to them tell you very little about whether you are actually thriving.
Here is a calm walkthrough of how we read a standard panel with clients. Not to replace a clinician, but to make your next conversation a better one.
First, what bloodwork is not
A blood panel is a snapshot. It tells you where a marker sat on the morning you fasted. It does not tell you the trend. It does not tell you the context. And the reference range printed next to each result is a population average. Being "in range" is not the same as being optimal for you.
The most useful thing you can do is keep your panels in one folder, in date order, so you can see the trend.
The markers worth looking at first
If you want to spend ten minutes with a panel and come away with a useful picture, look at these.
- Fasting glucose and HbA1c. Your average blood sugar over recent months. Watch the trend, not just the single number.
- Lipid panel. Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and especially the triglyceride to HDL ratio. The ratio is often more telling than the individual numbers.
- Liver markers. ALT, AST, and GGT. Elevated GGT is often the earliest signal that something is off, including alcohol load.
- Kidney markers. Creatinine and eGFR. Worth checking, especially as people age.
- Iron studies. Ferritin, iron saturation, transferrin. Low energy and poor recovery often start here, particularly in women.
- Vitamin D, B12, folate. The three deficiencies that show up most often in our client population.
- Thyroid panel. TSH, free T4, and ideally free T3. Energy, mood, body composition, all connected here.
- Inflammatory markers. hs-CRP if your panel includes it. A blunt but useful systemic inflammation read.
If you have access to a more advanced panel, the markers below add useful depth.
- Fasting insulin. Often more sensitive to early metabolic drift than fasting glucose.
- ApoB or LDL-P. Particle count, often a better cardiovascular risk read than LDL cholesterol alone.
- Sex hormones, in context. Testosterone, oestradiol, SHBG. Always with reference to age, cycle, and clinical context.
What to mostly ignore on a single panel
A few things that often cause panic and shouldn't.
- A single out-of-range white cell count. If you are otherwise well, this is usually transient. Repeat before worrying.
- A single elevated liver enzyme. Especially after recent exercise or alcohol. Re-test in a few weeks.
- Sex hormones tested at the wrong cycle point. Without context, the number is not useful.
- Tumour markers in a healthy person. These are screening tools used by clinicians in specific contexts, not general health checks.

- The trend. What has shifted compared with the last panel. Direction matters more than absolute numbers.
- The protocol implications. Is there anything in the numbers that should change what we are doing or planning.
