The hard part of a protocol is rarely the protocol. It is the weekend away, the long-haul flight, the fortnight at your parents' place. This is the answer to that. The shell is rigid, so nothing gets crushed in a bag. The display sits in the lid, so you can check the temperature inside without breaking the seal. The packs freeze flat, which means you can be ready the night before rather than the morning of.

Materials

• Moulded hard shell in oxblood. Matte, not glossy.
• Full-perimeter zip with twin metal pulls, so the case opens flat.
• Black woven lining throughout. No foam tray, so pens lie flat and loose rather than forced upright.
• Mesh zip pocket in the lid for tips, swabs and the rest.
• Elastic retaining strap across the base.
• Webbing loop at one end for a carabiner or wrist strap.

Four steps

1. Freeze the cooling packs flat, ideally overnight.
2. Sit the packs in the base, then lay your pens flat on top. They are meant to lie loose, not stand up.
3. Zip it closed and check the display. Give it a few minutes to settle before you read it.
4. Keep it out of direct sun and out of a hot car. Refreeze the packs whenever you have a freezer.

Common questions

How many pens does it hold?
Several, lying flat side by side, with tips and swabs in the lid pocket. There is no moulded tray, so you are not locked into a fixed number or a fixed shape.

Can I take it on a plane?
The cooling packs are TSA-approved and the case is sized for cabin luggage. Airline and border rules vary, so carry your script or your letter from us when travelling internationally, and check the requirements for your destination before you fly.

Does it need power or batteries?
The cooling comes from the frozen packs, not electricity, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to plug in. The display runs on its own internal cell.

Does the display show the temperature of my pens?
It reads the air inside the case. Give it a few minutes after closing before you rely on the number.

How long does it stay cold?
That depends on how thoroughly the packs were frozen and how warm it is outside. Refreeze whenever you can, and keep it out of direct sun and hot cars. The display is there so you are never guessing.

How do I clean it?
Wipe the shell and the lining with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not submerge it. Let it dry fully open before storing.

Is it only for pens?
No. It suits anything small you would rather keep cool and protected in transit.
